If you like biscuits and you like camping, you can have both once you know about cooking biscuits on a campfire. Biscuits are a fast and tasty quick bread that goes great with campground breakfasts, lunches or dinners. You do not need many materials or ingredients for enjoying this camping treat.

Pack Your Dough

Before you head out on your camping trip, decide what kind of biscuit dough you want to use. Prepackaged mixes are easily packed and stored and only require water for preparing the dough. Refrigerator packages of dough can also be used, and do not require any preparation. You do need to have some kind of camping refrigerator for keeping the packages cold, however, so these kind are not good for backpacking trips. You can also bring along the ingredients for biscuits – flour, baking powder and soda, milk and eggs – and make your dough from scratch if you are really adventurous.

Biscuits on a Stick

Once you have your dough prepared and a good bed of coals in your campfire, you can bake the biscuits on the end of a stick. First, make sure your hands are clean because you will have to handle the dough. Use a stick that is about one inch in diameter and at least two to three feet long. Also, make sure the stick is not from a plant that is toxic, like poison oak or yew.

Wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the end of the stick and extending down the stick for about four inches. Take a piece of dough and wrap it completely around the aluminum foil. Press it hard to get it to stick well.

Hold the dough on a stick about a foot or so over the coals at the edge of the campfire. Keep the dough out of direct flames and just use the heat of the coals or the biscuit may get covered in soot. Rotate the stick as the biscuit cooks so that all sides are evenly done. When it is light brown all over, remove the biscuit from the stick and enjoy it with a pat of butter and some jam, or just eat it plane.

The Two Pie Tin Method

Another way of cooking biscuits over a campfire is by placing the biscuits in a single layer on a lightly greased pie tin. Give them a little room on the sides for rising. Invert a second, greased pie tin on top making a lid. Wrap the whole thing tightly in aluminum foil and place it on the coals at the edge of the campfire. After a few minutes on one side, flip the pie tins over and cook for a few minutes on the other side.

Cooking Times

Cooking biscuits in the oven takes about 15 minutes. When you are using a campfire for cooking them, it will not take this long. The campfire is much hotter than a regular oven and cooking time will only be about one half to one third the time.

Campfire Safety

Whenever you are enjoying a campfire, for biscuit making or anything else, always use common sense around the fire. Make sure the area around the fire is clear so there are no trip hazards. Use heavy oven mitts or fire tongs for removing cooking pots and utensils from the fire. Have water nearby for putting the fire out before you leave the area.

Enjoying biscuits by a campfire is easy and fun. Biscuits and other campfire foods often taste especially good, maybe because the cooking becomes part of the adventure.
