In the times that we live in, people are finding more and more creative ways to create extra space in the home without spending a large amount of money, or time on renovations. One creative way would be to convert your existing garage into a room. Sounds complicated, but it’s actually an easy process. There are many benefits of converting a garage into a room such as the added space, the fact you don’t have to spend money on a contractor, and finally the fact that you’ll have a room where you can experience being outdoors without actually “being” outdoors. The first thing to do when converting the space is to clean, clean, clean.
A lot of times we tend to use our garage as storage space for things we haven’t gotten around to sorting and throwing away, and it can eventually build up and become unsightly. So its good to take a weekend or two off and completely clean out your garage to get the process started. The next step to making a garage feel more like a room, would be to paint the walls. You want to choose a paint for exteriors so that it will last longer, and choose a color that you’ll be happy with. It can be any color from white or to something like electric blue, the choice is entirely up to you.
The next part to do is storage. There are so many options now when it comes to storage, that this should be an easy process. For instance, since you want the garage to look like a room, it would be best to find storage that’s durable, yet stylish at the same time instead of opting for the typical metal shelves that are usually in everyone’s garage. It’s good to have storage because that way you can still put away items in your garage, but now it will be organized and stylish at the same time. The next part is a bit more tricky and that’s the furniture placement. If you don’t plan on parking your car in the garage, or if your garage is big enough to accommodate your car and furniture, then feel free to place it anyway you’d like. If you have enough space, then place the furniture as you would in a normal room. Place the sofa, loveseat and whatever else you can think of to give it a cozy look. Or if you’re planning on using it for a bedroom of sorts, then maybe get the sofas that turn into sleepers that way the room will have a dual function. Add some tables to the mix, and definitely accessorize, like placing artwork on the walls and if possible, maybe even a television. You might not ever want to come back in the house!
However, if you still plan on parking your car, then depending on the size of your garage, you will have to be a lot more careful of how you place your furniture and what exactly you’ll be placing in there. If it’s a smaller space, then a simple convertible sofa and maybe a table or so will do. Finally, since it still is technically a garage, you’ll find that you don’t have a lot of flooring options, so the next best thing would be to get a rug to anchor the room. Of course, it’s still a good idea to have artwork on the walls to give it a personal touch and a television, if possible. Either way, you’ll have the extra space you desire and will be pleased that you didn’t have to come out of a lot of money to create this brand new room.
