How To Clean A Mattress?

Step 1. Gathering the tools and supplies necessary for cleaning your mattress is the first thing you will need to do. This will save you a great deal of time that some people spend searching for what they need. To clean a mattress properly you will need the following tools and supplies:

A vacuum
Baking soda
Laundry Spot Remover
Water
Spray bottle with spray nozzle
Clean cloths
Toothbrush or another soft style bristle brush

Step 2. Remove all bedding such as sheets, pillows, blankets, mattress pad covers and bedding skirts from your bed. Make sure that you wash all bedding before placing it back on your clean mattress. For large comforters or blankets you can opt to hang them in the sunshine to freshen up instead of washing them if you prefer.

Step 3. Vacuum the entire surface of your mattress. This includes all of the sides as well as the underside of the mattress.

Step 4. If you have stains in your mattress you can use a laundry spot remover to treat these areas. If necessary pour your laundry spot remover into the spray bottle to apply to the stained areas. Do not spray heavily as this can cause longer drying times that would be desired. Allow the spot remover to set for about 15 to 30 minutes. Use a dry clean cloth to blot out the cleaning solution from the surface of your mattress. As the stain is blotted up you may need to change your cleaning cloth with a fresh one. Fill a spray bottle with water and spray over the area that you treated for the stain. Blot up the water to help remove any chemicals that may be left in the mattress. Again do not over saturate the mattress.

Step 5. Sprinkle baking soda over your entire mattress surface. The baking soda will help to remove any odors that may be trapped inside of the mattress. It will also help to dry up any areas that may have moisture built up in it. Allow the baking soda to set on the mattress surface for at least 2 hours for the best results.

Step 6. Vacuum up all of the baking soda from your mattress. You will want to use a brush type accessory for the vacuum if you have one available. This will help to remove any caked on baking soda that has absorbed moisture. Make sure that you vacuum the sides of your mattress thoroughly as well.

Step 7. Turn your mattress over and again follow the instructions for stain treating if necessary.

Step 8. Sprinkle this side as well with baking soda to remove any odors or moisture areas that are present. Let the baking soda set on this side of the mattress for another two hours.

Step 9. Vacuum of the backing soda from the mattress surface.

Step 10. If you used a liquid cleaner or water on any area of your mattress you will need to allow 4 to 5 hours for this to dry before placing any type of sheets, mattress covers or bedding on the mattress. Do this while the mattress is even slightest bit damp can cause mold and mildew to grow within the mattress.

Removing Urine Stains From A Mattress

Step 1. To remove urine stains from a mattress will require the use of vinegar, water, a spray bottle and clean cloths.

Step 2. Make a solution using half water and half white vinegar. Pour the mixture into your spray bottle to use for treating urine stains in a mattress.

Step 3. Remove everything from the mattress such as sheets, mattress covers and pads, blankets, pillows and other bedding items.

Step 4. Spray the urine stain that is on the mattress with your vinegar and water solution. Make sure that you do not spray an excessive amount as this can cause you to have a longer drying time than what is desired.

Step 5. Using your clean cloth blot out the vinegar and water solution. This should help to remove the urine from your mattress as well. Vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant to help remove microorganisms that cause odor and health hazards. It is also free from any toxic fumes or gases that are in many disinfectant sprays making the vinegar and water solution safe to use on any surfaces throughout your home.

Step 6. Allow your mattress 4 to 5 hours to thoroughly dry. Just because your mattress may feel dry on the outside does not mean that it is dry inside where mold and mildew can begin growing.
