Weeds. They harm your plants and vegetables, they create havoc in your garden and lawn areas, and they are not very nice to look at. While this is a good solution, many people would like to see a less expensive alternative that allows for the same weed killing result.
There are a few different solutions and mixtures that you can create right at home. These mixtures will have the same affect on weeds as the expensive store-bought brands do. Take a little time out of your day to mix-up these homemade weed-killing creations. You will be able to rid your lawn and garden of weeds, and save money at the same time.

Vinegar, Salt and Dish Soap
Truth be told, each of these items will work as an individual weed killer, but mixed together they are a lethal combination for weeds. Using a spray bottle to mix your ingredients, combine a mixture base of 1 qt. household vinegar, 1/4 cup salt and 2 tsp. liquid dish detergent. Shake this combo up vigorously until the ingredients have blended together nicely. Here is how it works…
– The salt acts as a drying agent and dries the weed up; much like salt dries out the human body.
– The dish soap allows the mixture to stay on the weeds you spray it on.
– The vinegar acts as a dissolving and killing agent to the weed.
*This mixture will also kill plants, so be sure to only spray the weeds.
Baking Soda Weed Killer
Want a quick solution to getting rid of pesky crabgrass? Sprinkle some baking soda over the areas you want cleared and presto… The crabgrass will start to die in a matter of hours. No mixing together of any other chemicals or products. Simple baking soda will do it all by itself.
Bleach Weed Killer
Bleach kills weeds in almost the same manner as many of the store-bought products do, it causes an extreme shift in the ph of the plant that is sprayed. Remember, only a weaker bleach solution needs to be used on the targeted area. Use too much and you will risk the possibility of killing the weed, along with everything around it, even if you don’t spray on everything around it. Bleach has a tendency to branch out. Even the rain won’t stop it from killing whatever it is sprayed on.
Salt Weed Killer
As mentioned before, salt – combined with other ingredients, makes an excellent weed killer. However, salt can also be used on its own to kill weeds. The bottom line is this… Salt kills plants! It dehydrates them and basically cuts off water and oxygen from the plant. While salt is an excellent weed killer, it will hang around after the job is done and kill off other plants as well. This makes it somewhat problematic. Be very wary of where you place salt in your garden. If you are too liberal with it you will be asking for trouble.
These are some of the most effective ways to rid your lawn and garden of pesky weeds. There are other techniques that will work, but the ones listed above are some of the best-known home solutions for weed killing. If you are tired of dealing with problematic weeds – and don’t want to spend a lot of money, then why not put on some gloves and mix a few simple household ingredients together? Before you know it you will have a weed-free yard that everyone can enjoy!
