Installing Window Diagonally
« on: November 15, 2012, 02:12:39 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I have a tiny log cabin that gets very little light.  There are no windows at all on the gable ends near the roofline.  I would love to put hexagonal windows at each of the ends of the cabin, but I really can't afford them.  Has anyone tried installing small square windows diagonally?  I know it would be tricky as far as the headers go, but what's the difference between framing a diamond-shaped window, versus a hex, really?  I can see that it would open funny, but would like to know if anyone has tried this?

Hello Penny,
Happy New Year!
Diagonal window is something very trendy if done properly but I haven't tried it yet, would love to hear other responses.

Hi, Linda!  I would love to put those hexagonal windows in our small cabin too, but I would never be able to afford them or be able to talk my husband into installing them.  I've never seen either diamond-shaped or hexagonal windows being installed, so I couldn't answer your question.  But I'll ask my husband and a couple of our neighbors if they can answer it for you.  One neighbor creates stained glass windows for churches and the other one is a retired engineer who is in the process of doubling the size of his home, doing most of the work by himself. He has some pretty unique ideas for his home, so he may know something about the various styles of windows.  If they can't help you, I'll try to do some research online and find someone who can.
