Many people show very casual approach while constructing a fireplace mantle. This is a really good article to take precautionary approach. The interior part of fireplace mantle should be using material which is not volatile. Also as a precaution always have a fire extinguisher, not to construct near wooden furniture, curtains and blow it off properly after use.

:)  You've made some very valid points, Coolpeter.  People should definitely take the precautions you've mentioned when constructing a fireplace or fireplace mantle.  If the person is constructing a fireplace, then he or she should consult a certified mason to do the brick or stone work for the chimney.
